It is widely accepted that we experience an emotional response to colour. It can be to the colours around us in our homes, the colours we choose to wear and even the colour of that new car we have just ordered! But it goes a lot deeper than that.
Colour is a vibration or frequency. Each colour has a different frequency or vibration within the visible colour spectrum with red being the longest, lowest vibration and violet being the shortest, highest vibration. Also, colour is light and light is colour. If you take a glass prism and shine light through it, the light passing through the other side will split into the 7 colours of the spectrum and you will have a rainbow. Conversely, if you take a round disc, split it into 7 equal segments with each one coloured according to the 7 colours of the spectrum and then spin it rapidly, it will appear white.
What does this mean for us? All living things on the surface of our planet require sunlight in order to survive. We are governed by the rising and falling of the sun. We are 'kick-started' by light which lets the pineal gland know that it should stop producing melatonin (which encourages sleep) and start producing seratonin which wakes us up and makes us feel good. If light and colour are one and the same, it follows that if we are light-sensitive and depend on light, we also respond to colour. Not only do we respond to colour, but we actually emit it in the form of an aura. Although, the aura is not visible to most of the population, it can be photographed with special equipment and the aura or energy field can now be measured using scientific equipment. How is this energy field or aura generated? It is generated by 7 major energy centres called chakras, which produce the same frequencies as visible light. Not only that, but our bodies vibrate at different frequencies ranging from red to violet, depending on their location. In other words, our whole energetic system is composed of vibrations or frequencies.
The Chakra System
The word chakra is the Sanskrit word for wheel and that is more or less what the chakra is; it's a vortex of energy occurring where the energy meridians cross each other 14 times. They are seated in the spine and extend out of our body forming part of the energy field. Physically, they link to the endocrinal system and their balance determines our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. They can be likened to transformers which process incoming and outgoing energy (vibrations) at a rate which is comfortable for us. It is said that all our life experiences and beliefs are processed through our chakras. When these experiences are traumatic and are difficult to process, they tend to be held in the energetic system and affect our beliefs and the way we react to situations. The chakra system is responsible for the clear, balanced colour vibrations in the aura which serve as a protection and is affected by the energy fields surrounding us. Vibrations from such things as plants and crystals are very beneficial but unfortunately we can be exposed to electromagnetic fields from less benign sources such as computers, mobile phones, etc which are not in harmony with our energy fields. We can also be adversely affected by other people's energies. If we are going through emotional challenges, this will also show up in our energy. Ideally, these vortexes of energy are spinning gently and are in balance, being neither too big nor too small. However, if the chakras have too many demands put on them, they can become distorted and out of balance and even shut down altogether, resulting in physical dis-ease. If one sees each chakra as a bank of energy and if we keep withdrawing without topping up, we end up in overdraft and start using the energy which has been stored in the cells of the body. In other words, we are open to dis-ease.
The most powerful way of bringing the chakra system back into balance, thus promoting healing on all levels, is with the use of colour. When the chakras are brought back into balance we see things in a different way and, because our inner world changes, our outer world responds in a positive way. Life gets better!
A Colour Therapy treatment is gentle, relaxing and non-invasive but is also very powerful when combined with light by an experienced colour therapist. I personally use a crystal colour torch but there are many ways of applying colour and a colour therapist will be able to advise you on ways to self-treat on an ongoing basis.
Here is an example of self-treating. If you are inclined to wear a lot of blue or have a lot of blue around you in the office or home and are feeling sluggish and a bit down in the dumps, I suggest that you bring some orange into your system. Orange is an anti-depressant as it lifts the spirits and energises the system. Orange is the colour of fun and sensuality. You can wear something orange such as a scarf, top, or jewellery. You can eat orange foods as these carry the vibration of orange. Try it and see how you feel.
If you would like to know more about how you can use colour in simple ways to improve your day-to-day living, please email me at ruth.maier@googlemail.com. I am planning to send out useful tips every few weeks and would be delighted to hear from you.
